Invisalign Treatment Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Choosing to straighten your teeth with Invisalign is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile. At Envisage Dentistry Tweedsmuir, we guide you through every phase of your Invisalign journey, so you always know what to expect. In this blog, we break down the full treatment timeline from your initial consultation to the day you remove your final aligner.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually shift your teeth into place. Unlike traditional braces, these aligners are discreet and comfortable, making them a popular choice for both teens and adults looking for a less noticeable option.

The Invisalign Treatment Timeline

1. Consultation and Smile Assessment

The first step begins with a consultation at Envisage Dentistry Tweedsmuir. During this appointment:

  • Your teeth and bite are examined.
  • We take digital scans or impressions of your teeth.
  • You’ll receive a proposed treatment plan, including a preview of how your smile could look after Invisalign.

If you decide to go ahead, your custom aligners will be ordered based on this scan.

2. Aligner Fabrication (2–3 Weeks)

Once your scans are submitted, Invisalign will create a set of aligners tailored to your teeth. This typically takes around two to three weeks. When they arrive at the practice, you’ll be invited in for a fitting.

3. Starting Your Invisalign Journey

At your aligner fitting:

  • We’ll ensure the first set fits properly.
  • You’ll be given instructions on how to wear and care for your aligners.
  • Typically, each set is worn for 1–2 weeks, for 20–22 hours a day.

We may place small attachments (tooth-coloured buttons) on some teeth to help guide the aligners.

4. Progress Check-Ups (Every 6–8 Weeks)

You’ll return to the practice every 6 to 8 weeks to monitor progress and collect your next sets of aligners. These appointments are usually quick and help ensure everything is on track.

5. Treatment Duration (3–18 Months)

The total length of treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case. Most patients wear Invisalign for around 6 to 12 months, although minor cases may be shorter and more complex ones can take up to 18 months.

6. Retainers and Smile Maintenance

Once your last aligner is removed, you’ll be fitted for retainers to help maintain your new smile. These are worn overnight and help prevent teeth from shifting back.

FAQs About Invisalign

1. Is Invisalign painful?

Invisalign is generally more comfortable than traditional braces. You may feel slight pressure when changing to a new set of aligners, but this usually fades in a day or two.

2. Can I eat and drink while wearing aligners?

You should remove your aligners when eating or drinking anything besides water to prevent staining or damage.

3. What happens if I lose an aligner?

Contact us right away. Depending on where you are in your cycle, we may advise you to move to the next set or order a replacement.

4. How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

Clean them daily with a soft toothbrush and rinse in lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.
